So I Hear There's a Storm?

I know by now most everyone outside of the state of Florida is cursing up a storm, at this storm. Just remember, though, no matter how bad it gets...

Don't drive angry....don't drive angry!!

Lucky for me, I was able to buy a couple of roundbales of alfalfa before the storm hit, so I have no room to complain. The horses all have blankets, shelter, two large stocktanks filled with warmed water, and free-choice premium alfalfa (these are 1900lb bales--so heavy they actually stripped the gears off my bale mover and I had to call someone with a bale bed to move them in).

Despite being pretty much set for the storm, the kids still insisted on grain. I took them off their oats, though, because I wanted them to eat as much hay as they could possibly get--the hay is what keeps them warm in the -25 degree wind chills. Oats...not so much.

Poor, suffering kids.

Speaking of suffering (or lack thereof), I went out during the blizzard portion of yesterday's snowpocolyse to make sure everyone was doing ok and the boys were running around and playing!! I took that as a sign they were doing better than I was, so I trudged back inside, took off the ten layers of winter wear I had piled on, and sat down to get some work done from home.

Last night, though, I finally broke down and went to the store. On my way there, I spotted a sundog.

Although it didn't signal that the wind was over, or the temps were to improve, at least that meant the snow was finished. It's impossible to tell how much we got because it all blew into the next state over, but I won't officially call this event finished until these winds die down. Hopefully the nearly two tons of hay will last until then (with these swine horses, you never know)!

Wait a minute, the sun is out...I can almost see my shadow. Thankfully that doesn't count.

Phil me meet again,

Wow it doesn't look like you guys got nearly the snow we did. Oy I'm already sick of the snow. We tried to get my husbands SUV out today (just traded off his 4x4) and the snow is so high the SUV high centered. oy!

The cold and the wind sounds miserable. At least the horses are having fun. We're getting hammered as usual, snow last night which turned into an ice storm. Looks pretty on the trees but the driveway is a skating rink. Dicey.Stay warm.

I don't even know what a Sun Dog is...I mean I can tell from your photos, but I don't think I ever saw one...?

Your horses are fortunate to have you looking out for them. The excellent alfalfa will keep them warm - you are so right!

Stay warm - we have some winds now, but not as much as you probably!

Thanks, Jennifer. The sundog was really cool--I didn't even know that was what I was looking at, at the time.

No, thankfully Nicole we didnt even come close to what you all got. We got more than it looks because it blew all over the place, so there are some piles, especially in town, but definitely not up to our roofs!

I feel so bad for everyone who got ice, too. We really lucked out--we were supposed to get ice for sure, but didn't. A few years ago a huge ice storm came through and things have still not recovered. I still have branches to burn from it!

I've never seen a sun dog before now, either. I wish I had a better camera with me, because it was very cool!! :)
