Kitties

As I mentioned before, there were some unexpected additions to my menagerie. Earlier this week while feeding, I heard a high-pitched meow coming from the barn.

I went over to inspect and found a small, gray kitten who had fallen from the second floor of the barn. I picked him up (he hissed and tried to scratch and bite me--he's a fiesty little fella!), but I managed to get him to calm down a bit and let me return him to his home, where I found his brother waiting.

Of course it could be his sister. Or her sister. Or her brother. Who knows?

Anyway, they are as wild as March hares, but they are cute as buttons. I could say they were a couple of cute March rabbit buttons, but no one would have a clue as to what I was talking about. But that's not so unusual, is it?

Unfortunately on Friday I discovered another one of their siblings had drowned in the stock tank. I felt terrible about it--evidently he had fallen from the barn window right into the tank sometime during the night.

I thought it was this kitty above since it was marked the same way, but it was an additional kitten. I've checked them a few times and seen momma kitty with them--there are three babies left. She's done such a good job of hiding them that I had no idea, and they are all very well fed. She's a great hunter--there is a miniature boneyard up in the top of the barn.

Honestly, it's kind of a gruesome site, but when you catch a glimpse of those kittens with their fluffy tails and their precious faces, they tend to make you disregard the expansive carnage.

Isn't that sweet?

Yes, it was so sad. I felt terrible, wishing I had been there to help it. :(

Poor kitty. Such is the life of a barn cat.
