Talk'n Turkey

My good friend Kim had quite the announcement over the weekend--Thanksgiving and Dressing had...well....baby turkeys (what are little turkeys called, anyway? I used to call my brother a little turkey, but I never looked up the technical name for it)!

Proud momma, Dressing, looks over her turkey tots. Aren't they adorable?!

Lord help me, I want one...or two...oh please deliver me from temptation....or turkeys, either one.

Proud papa Thanksgiving is one handsome dude!

I wonder if show turkeys are any easier to fit? Well, at least if they didn't pan out in the showring, they'd pan out pretty good in the fryer :)

Oh my gosh!!!!! They did turn out didn't they? And I won't tell Thanksgiving what you said about the fryer....poor guy. They are the most fun to watch and the way she interacts with them is amazing, instincts are wonderful.. I am going to reserve, with rights to refuse a couple of them for you. The little buggers are going to be in high demand it looks like. I do think it might be easier to show turkeys then horses and it HAS to be cheaper.

They did! Hahaha...well, I could never eat any animal I took care of, which is why I just can't bring myself to get into swine or cattle--they'd all end up as pets no matter what I told myself! LOL!! Besides, YOU named them Thanksgiving and Dressing! Hmmm...I wonder what the turkey tots should be named? Green Beans Casserole and Sweet Potato Pie? :)

funny you said those names!! The gals at work named the original pair and so we were getting names for the babies...your two were mentioned as well as, Yam, Mincemeat Pie, Mashed tater, Gravy, and so on......they want me to put different colored finger nail polish on the toenails so I can tell them apart and call them by the correct name! Lets see....NOT! Can you imagine? I have alot of fun with the gals at work, most are city girls and they are fasinated by my animal stuff. They will call me with the strangest questions and will argue with people about things and then just say to them "I am calling Kim, she will know", like everyone has to believe me. They were confounded to find out that turkeys only have to mate once per clutch, they store sperm and that chickens have to mate for each egg. Yup.....I am a fountian of useless info!

OMG, I let the mares and foals out into the small pasture while I quickly chored and stuff before it stormed....couldn't find Dressing anywhere, but Thanksgiving was strutting around out in the grass like she was out there. Soooo, I went to look there and while I was looking, Ebony was running and bucking and all of a sudden Dressing shot up out of the grass and flogged Ebony!! Ebony bout died, and then Diva Dudette went passed and she got her too! Too funny. I sure hope that they do lright during the severe storms. After the one, they were bone dry and happy little campers. I will try and keep an eye on them!

OMG, I about had to pull over to the side of the road during rush hour when I got your text because I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes!!! I could just imagine that big bird coming at Eb with claws full out screaming "get away from my babies you cow!!" ROFL!!!!! And just something about the words "Dressing attacked Ebony"--if I had an accident and that was the last message they found to me, what would anyone think that MEANT?!?! ROFLMAO!!!!!

Well, I thought you might get a kick out of that.....I have a saying "it ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog", sort of sums up who I am (got a feeling it might sum up who you are as well, but then I should go around calling friends dogs). Had to change my saying to "it ain't the size of the turkey in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the turkey"!

They say animals don't precieve size and I think this might be true. I bout peed my pants and was scared that the mares would step on all of my little side dishes, but Old Dressing took care of that. Now that was a time that I had wished for my camera on the ready. At least Diva Dudette wont be afraid if a turkey attacks her at the show!

"My little side dishes" --OMG, I about peed MY pants when I read that!!

And the NSN Specialized Foal Raising Program: We teach our foals to anticipate sudden turkey attacks.

Just can't beat that.... :D

LOL.....yep, people will be sending babies from far and wide to go thru our program! And just think, you can be the head trainer....I sure hope this is lucrative!

Some serious issues in Turkey land. Went out to chore this morning and saw Thanksgiving, heard the side dishes, but no Dressing, anywhere. My heart sank, so I went in and got Brian up as I am NO good at catching baby turkeys one armed.....just so you know, I now know I am better one armed than he is two armed! We caught the little buggers and got them into a tub and in the house, the cats were thinking it was breakfast time. Thanksgiving was guarding them some, but clearly isn't made for single fatherhood. I went on out to finish chores and found Dressing, standing in the pasture, looking terrible. I herded her into the barn and went back to get Brian to help me with her. Her breast is pulled away and looks nasty, but I think that is her only wound.....so I packed it with Furicin ointment, covered with gauze and then used bright pink vet wrap to hold it all on. We shall see, I will pick up water soluable antibiotics tomorrow and force feed it to her....that is if she is still alive. I put her in an old water tank and put the babies in there with her. At first she attacked them, but I think she thought something was still getting them, as soon as I got them all in there and they quit peeping in distress, she calmed down. Last check, they were all under her (I am down to eight though, whatever got her must have gotten one) and she was quiet. I have saved worse chickens before (unless she has internal injuries) and I may take her to the vet tomorrow if she is still alive. They will harass me terribly, but damn......this is Dressing.

I AM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! AND LAST CHECK CHECK DRESSING WAS DOING WONDERFUL! I am amazed, but she is eating, drinking and taking care of the little ones....I think at this point she will live and maybe even fully recover..I need to go chore now, but wanted to check in. I will e-mail later on, I feel like I abandoned you.....
